New Kids on the Block: Corner Trainers & Fresh Classes

The Corner Family is growing, and so is our fitness gamut. With two Grosse Pointe studios offering everything from HIIT and yoga to Lagree and Pilates, we’re constantly expanding ways to keep our clients moving, motivated, and having fun with fitness.

Our instructors come from all different fitness backgrounds and are excited to share their energy, enthusiasm, and love of movement with the community. We caught up with the newest members of our Corner Team and learned these trainers truly practice what they preach!

Emma Van Hoet

Teaches: HIITstrong, COREstrong, Lagree

What got you moving?

I was formerly a dancer for about 16 years. After that, I started running then added strength training, yoga, and Pilates.

Fitness of choice?

I try to take HIIT classes, run on Lake Shore, and add in a Lagree class when I can.

Love/hate exercise?

Core work is one of those things that I would tag on to the end of a workout, so a whole class dedicated to working your core is tough, but important!

Musical motivation?

Eminem, TI, and 90s rap when I'm running or at HIIT.

Mantra?

Every day is a gift. Express gratitude for your health and an able body that allows you to move.

Summer goals/plans/highlights?

I'm looking forward to finally planning a wedding for next year, and I also aim to finish another half marathon by the end of September.

Whitney Stines

Teaches: HIITstrong, COREstrong, Lagree

What got you moving?

I grew up an athlete but got back into fitness working as a young lawyer. I was extremely stressed, and my health had taken a back seat. Exercising became my own form of therapy and stress relief. I saw physical results, but the mental benefits blew me away. Fitness quickly became a passion.

Fitness of choice?

I take Lagree and HIITStrong, and I also do strength and cardio training at home on my own when I can’t make it to class.

Love/hate exercise?

It’s embarrassing to admit that I hate cardio, especially the treadmill and the stationary bike. I obviously still do it because it’s so important, but I do NOT enjoy it!

Musical motivation?

Pop music. I am shamefully a huge Taylor Swift fan.

R & R?

I am actively trying to stretch more, take walks, baths, and use the Theragun.

Mantra?

Effort is all that matters. My dad would always tell me, "Knock 'em dead!" I think those go hand in hand. If you work hard and put forth effort, the rest follows.

Summer goals/plans/highlights?

Enjoying time with family and friends, boating, going Up North, and sticking with a fitness routine along with all the fun. Life is all about balance!

Cam Shortz

Teaches: HIITstrong, COREstrong, Power Hour, Private training

What got you moving?

I’ve been an athlete my entire life, so I’ve always trained for that. When my playing days ended, [exercise] was such a big part of my everyday routine that it just stuck.

Fitness of choice?

I do HIIT, yoga, Lagree, and traditional weightlifting. I’m excited to take a Barre class, something I’ve never done before.

Love/hate exercise?

Lagree is totally different from what I typically do. It’s a step out of my comfort zone and I always go too fast, but it’s an incredible workout for men.

Musical motivation?

I really enjoy listening to podcasts while I work out, but if I had to pick music it would be rap.

Summer goals/plans/highlights?

Hanging out with my dogs, relaxing, and spending time with friends and family.

Carrie Moore

Teaches: Lagree

What got you moving?

Having three sons under age 2!

Fitness of choice?

My daily regimen consists of either HITT, boxing, strength training with a run or long bike ride, or a spin class. I do my best to get a yoga or Yin yoga class in during the week.

Love/hate exercise?

Burpees and long-distance running.

R&R?

Yin yoga or a day off! I also love Air Relax recovery for my legs.

Mantra?

1. Being uncomfortable and being able to sustain it for a bit is where the magic happens.

2. Each day is a new day to improve yourself.

Summer goals/plans/highlights?

The last year and a half we have been building a new cottage, and my goal is to spend every opportunity there. It's our happy place.

Ali Manion

Teaches: BarrEnergy

What got you moving?

Growing up I was a competitive swimmer and played basketball and lacrosse. I always felt my best when I had a chance to move my body every day. Sitting still is definitely not my forte!

Fitness of choice?

Since I've been back in GP, I've been doing a lot of Lagree and absolutely love that The Corner is offering this amazing modality here! I also try to pick up heavy weights from time to time, too.

Love/hate exercise?

Push-ups! They’re so good but have always been super tough for me.

Musical motivation?

For a big energy moment, RL Grime; for a flowy session, Zhu or Ott.

R & R?

I'm a really big fan of cupping. I also love a good foam roll session. I swear by plenty of sleep and lots and lots of water.

Mantra?

Open mind, open heart.

Summer goals/plans/highlights?

I'm hoping to finish my dissertation this summer and I’m super close! A big summer plan was my relocation back to GP last month and getting reacquainted with Detroit has been really fun.
