GOOD GAME: The Corner Summer Class Challenge Sparks Some Friendly Competition

We are nearing the end of Week 2 in The Corner Summer Class Challenge and the competition is already heating up. After the Leaderboard was posted last Sunday, the studios were full of comradely, competitive chatter.

As one Corner client, Meghan O’Neill, commented, “This challenge has awakened a competitive side of me I did not know existed.” A newcomer since The Corner introduced Lagree, Meghan is now venturing into other class offerings with the push from the challenge. “This will be my first time trying HIIT, so I’m excited to add that to my roster,” she said. Meghan has also committed to taking a class every day versus her usual couple classes a week. “Without the challenge, I wouldn’t be this motivated. I really want to win!”

It’s still early in the game, but clients have their eyes on the prize. There are, of course, major incentives. The Challenge started June 14 and runs all summer through August 31, inviting clients to attend as many Indoor/Virtual (The Corner GPW), Outdoor (Kerby Field), and Lagree (The Corner GPC) classes as they can within those 12 weeks to win some amazing prizes. Anyone who attends 24 classes—ANY CLASS TYPE—in the 12 weeks automatically enters a raffle for the grand prize. Here’s the breakdown:

• Indoor/GPW Studio winner gets an 8 class pack and $100 retail gift card.

• Outdoor/Kerby Field winner gets a 4 pack of Infrared Sauna and $100 retail gift card.

• Lagree/GPC Studio winner gets an 8 class Lagree pack and $100 retail gift card.

• Overall winner gets a 1-year Lagree monthly membership (a $2,800 value!).

• Raffle winner gets a 1-year Lagree monthly membership.

Feeling motivated? We sure are! We caught up with trainer Jo Kutchey for some intel on how a fitness challenge can push us further toward our health goals.

How can a fitness challenge motivate us to break out of a rut or step up our normal routine?

JK: I am the first person to understand that sometimes life just gets in the way and our workouts can’t always take priority. That’s why a fitness challenge is so motivating—it holds us to some accountability. If you plan to make four workouts that week, you make them—even if you have to take that 6am or 6pm class that might not be in your regular routine. A fitness challenge gives us momentum to keep going and allows us to see that we can always push ourselves just a little bit more!

Is a little friendly competition good for us?

JK: Our Corner Community is the absolute best. We are never truly competing with each other; rather, we are always cheering each other on to do the best that we can. With that said, a little friendly competition between our friends at the Corner adds some good fun and banter to our classes and encourages us to not press that snooze button after a long weekend or a bad night sleep.

What are some good tips when starting a fitness challenge? Should we be “in it to win it” or align ourselves with personal goals?

JK: Everyone’s lives, schedules, and fitness journeys are completely different. If you normally take two classes a week, maybe you push it to four; if you normally take four, maybe your goal is six. You ALWAYS do what is best for you, so let your challenge be against you and only you!
